Can I reuse Superbolt® tensioners?

You can reuse Superbolt® tensioners the same way a superhero reuses their signature move: time and time again. This article explains what factors to review to determine whether your Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioners can be reused.

Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJTs) are built for longevity and reliability. With proper maintenance and following our simple procedures, they can be reinstalled multiple times without losing strength or performance. In fact, many customers are still using the same tensioners they purchased over a decade ago.

Why is reuse possible? It comes down to engineering. Superbolt tensioners use a multi-jackbolt design that delivers high clamping force with relatively low installation torque. Unlike torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts, they don’t permanently stretch or deform when tightened. This means they maintain their integrity under tension and can be safely re-tensioned as long as they remain within nominal loading.

What to check before reuseBefore reinstalling a tensioner, inspect these critical areas:

  1. Nut body and jackbolt threads – Ensure threads are intact and check for any damage to the body.
  2. Jackbolt tips – Look for signs of deformation or unusual wear.
  3. Washer – Small depressions are normal, but major deformities require attention.

After inspection, clean and re-lubricate all parts to maintain performance and ensure proper installation. For a refresher on how to install your MJT, check out this simple guide.
