How do I relubricate Superbolt® tensioners?

Routine maintenance? Your secret weapon is relubrication. Superbolt® tensioners are engineered for reliability, but proper cleaning and lubrication after maintenance are key to achieving accurate preload. This article covers which lubricants to use and how to apply them for optimal performance.

During the factory assembly, all Superbolt® products, including jackbolt threads and tips, will be completely pre-lubricated and ready for immediate installation. After routine maintenance of the application, the parts must be cleaned and relubricated to safely achieve the desired preload.

Superbolt utilizes two commercially available lubricants: Molykote P-37 and Loctite LB-8012. You can purchase the lubricant directly or through a trusted distributor.

The Molykote P-37 lubricant is used with Superbolt products in environments with temperatures below 350°C [650°F]. The following types of tensioners use the Molykote lubricant: MT, CY, H650, SB8, and SB12.

The Loctite LB-8012 lubricant is used with the MTX2, SMX2, H650X2, NI2, NM2, SSJX2, and SJX2.

After thoroughly cleaning the parts and removing any rust or leftover application grease, use a brush to coat the jackbolt threads and tips with the appropriate lubricant. For the main stud thread, you may use any standard, anti-seize lubricant. Once the parts are relubricated, they are ready to be re-installed into the application.
