How can I speed up the installation and removal of Superbolt® multi-jackbolt tensioners?

Need to speed up the installation and removal of Superbolt® tensioners? We’ve assembled the team for the job. In this article, you will discover practical tips and advanced tools, like the Superbolt Tool and the Single Jackbolt Tool, that make installing and removing Superbolt tensioners faster, safer, and more efficient.

Designed to be easier and faster to install, Superbolt® multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJTs) have become the new standard for traditional bolting methods. Especially for large fasteners, MJTs are more practical given their reliability, safety, and ease of use. No matter the size of the MJTs, a single worker can install or uninstall the tensioner with the use of ordinary hand tools quickly and safely. When you’re dealing with unscheduled downtime or routine maintenance, every minute counts.

How can you speed up the installation and removal of Superbolt tensioners? While the torque wrench is the number one tool for placing MJTs in an application, there are a variety of methods to suit your needs.

  1. Assemble your super team: For flanges, you can utilize two workers with torque wrenches at 180º apart and follow the OEM pattern for tightening. These workers can also employ the use of air or electric impact tools.
  2. Impact gadgets: An air or electric impact wrench with an output of 100% - 120% of the target torque can be used during the preliminary tightening steps. After the tensioner is seated properly, it is recommended to finish the installation using a hand tool.
  3. Consider torque limiting extension bars (aka torque sticks) for a precise, speedy, and convenient way to reach a torque. Torque sticks come in different torque ratings that are color-coded for easy identification.

Engineered to speed up installation, Superbolt also offers two tools to assist you with installation.

  1. Single jackbolt tool: Designed for simplicity and efficiency, you can eliminate manual labor with the single jackbolt tool. The cordless and portable tool is an effortless way to tighten and untighten MJTs. First, input the desired torque value. Then, insert the tool over the jackbolt and position the reaction arm. Finally, pull the trigger and press the safety button for effortless tightening and untightening.
  2. Superbolt Tool: Powered by UniForce Technology, the Superbolt Tool simultaneously tightens all of the jackbolts. This tool is application-specific for niche use-cases. Our engineers will consult with you to determine if your unique circumstances would be a good fit for the Superbolt Tool.

Additional tips to increase the efficiency of installation:

  1. Lubricate the stud and washer: While new Superbolt tensioners come pre-lubricated, if you are re-installing a tensioner after maintenance, make sure to thoroughly coat the jackbolt threads and the washer face. Doing so can facilitate smoother installation and maintain the proper torque-to-load ratio.
  2. Follow the recommended tightening pattern: Tighten (4) jackbolts at 90º apart on all studs. When they reach 100% torque, move around the rest of the jackbolts in a circular pattern. If your product has four or six jackbolts, use a star pattern for all steps.
  3. Sockets: High hex stresses require the use of quality six-point impact sockets. Have several spares handy for each job and replace them at the first sign of wear.
