Can Superbolt® Provide Custom Protective Coatings?

Every hero needs a shield, and your bolted connections are no different. While we can’t promise invincibility, we offer advanced coatings that provide superior corrosion protection. This article explains how to protect bolted connections from corrosion in harsh environments, using coatings like Xylan or zinc flake.

Choosing the right finish is critical to ensure long-term performance and durability for your Superbolt® tensioners. At Nord-Lock Group, we have plenty of product-enhancing options to keep things protected in humid environments, offshore applications, or industries where clean room standards must be met.

To start, Xylan is a fluoropolymer coating that acts as a barrier that prevents oxygen from reacting with the steel parts. It is also used to reduce friction and improve wear resistance. This highly protective coating is used extensively in the oil & gas industry in off-shore and on-shore applications.

Another available coating commonly used with Superbolt products is zinc flake, which is anti-corrosive. Similar to the reinforced armor of a hero’s specialized suit, zinc flake acts as a sacrificial layer, taking much of the brunt of corrosion or damage to preserve the underlying material.

Superbolt also offers zinc or nickel plating, which provides some protection under its shiny metal finish. The environment consumes the plating before the steel begins to corrode. This plating is effective but should not be used in high humidity situations.

Next up is zinc phosphate, which provides some protection but should not be used in any high-humidity environments. It is a surface-level coating often used in mining applications.

The final coating that we offer on our products is black oxide. It is a sleek, black finish that is most often utilized to match the dark metal color of its application.
