How effective are Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers against bolt loosening?

The wedge-locking principle uses tension rather than friction to secure the bolted joint in place. All bolted connections will start to loosen during its life cycle. Nord-Lock wedge-locking principle does not only prevent loosening but actually stretches the bolt and prohibits further rotation.

Wedge-locking washers require a higher than average upfront cost than other fasteners, however, they are also the most suitable for critical bolted joints facing vibration and dynamic loads and can be reused – leading to lower long-term costs.

Looking to eliminate nut and bolt loosening?

The biggest challenge for a bolted joint, causing it to lose preload and fail, is spontaneous loosening. Vibrations are everywhere.

What causes loss of preload?

This graph shows all 5 nuts are safely secure even under severe vibration and dynamic loads.
A horizontal line in the graph indicates success in maintaining preload.

This Junker test shows all 5 nuts are safely secured even under severe vibration and dynamic loads.

(The Junker test is the most severe vibration test for bolted connections. The bolted joint is exposed to transverse movements underneath the bolt head or nut, while the clamping force is continuously measured.)
The effectiveness of different locking methods can easily be compared.
